German Government Uses J2EE
& Open Source Software
The software used by the German government to handle the results
of the Bundestag election... will be written in Java and deploy
Tomcat, JBoss and MySQL... The software... will compute preliminary
results (which are announced as soon as possible after the polls
close), run plausibility checks, and determine the Bundestag membership
as well as distribution of seats to the political parties. It
will use web clients for entry of voting data, data import, presentation
of results, and preparation of printed results. It will be based
on a three-level architecture... and deploy Enterprise Java Beans."
Dell Chooses J2EE Server
Dell has chosen BEA
WebLogic Server www.bea.com as the company's standard Java platform
for application development and deployment. Dell plans to migrate
a series of strategic applications... onto BEA WebLogic, including
DellServ, an internal tech support app used by more than 7,500
Dell customer service technicians.
Dell is also planning to build new Web services applications...
that will be designed to further advance its world-class customer
service offerings and help broaden the ...competitive advantages
of Dell's direct business model.
2EE Download Hits 2 Million
Java technology achieves yet another milestone.
On April 8th they had the two-millionth download of the Java 2
Platform, Enterprise Edition (J2EE) Software Developer Kit (SDK),
proving that the Java platform is one of the most successful industry
collaborations ever.
City Sees The Appeal Of Linux
London follows New York's open source adoption. The New York
financial community is increasingly adopting Linux to cut costs,
and London's banks aren't far behind.
Two of the leading vendors of the open-source operating system
have told Computing that the growing popularity of Linux in the
US is spreading to the UK.
IBM says it has 10 potential users on each side of the Atlantic.
HP says it is talking to seven London

banks, has nine users already in New York, and another 10 contemplating
a switch. Some major finance companies have already made the move.
Credit Suisse First Boston (CSFB) recently announced plans to
move its mission-critical application infrastructure onto Red
Hat Linux, and online trader eTrade is migrating to open-source
from its proprietary server platform.
Sherwin-Williams Co. Plan System Upgrade To Linux
No.1 U.S. Paint Makers, Sherwin-Williams Co. announce plans for
a system upgrade to Linux. This conversion will cover more than
2,500 stores to Linux within the next year and IBM's Services
Division have been hired to complete the project. Deployment of
the systems will begin July 02.

IBM Drills Linux Into Oil Industry
IBM has signed a deal with Landmark Graphics to build Linux supercomputers
and PCs for oil and gas companies, the companies will announce
Friday.
Landmark Graphics, a subsidiary of petroleum industry support
company Halliburton, provides software for oil exploration, drilling
and production. Under a three-year deal, IBM will cooperate with
the company to bring these products to Linux systems. IBM will
provide service and support for the products.

Sage Commits To Linux
IBM has announced an agreement with Sage, a major global supplier
of business management software and related products and services
to Small and Medium Enterprises (SME's), in one of the industry's
strongest endorsements of Linux for business critical applications
in the SME space.

Web Technology Is Still Cutting Costs
Efficiency and savings are driving online business. The face
of ebusiness is changing in the UK, with organisations taking
new technology more seriously and identifying real business benefits
and cost savings.
Some 60 per cent of UK companies believe online technologies
will reduce their costs by up to 10 per cent within two to three
years, according to Reality Bites, the second annual ebusiness
report from the CBI and KPMG Consulting.
A further 30 per cent anticipate reductions of between 11 and
30 per cent as a result of new technologies.
